Dsquared2: 30 years of rebellious style amid dazzling celebrations and new legal challenges
In the international fashion scene, few brands have managed to blend the irreverence of streetwear with sartorial elegance as effectively as Dsquared2. Founded in Milan in 1995 by Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten, the brand has built a unique identity, mixing North American influences with Italian craftsmanship.
From Canadian roots to conquering Milan
Born in Toronto to Italian parents, Dean and Dan Caten (originally Catenacci) began their fashion journey by attending the Parsons School of Design in New York. After experiences with important Italian fashion houses, in 1995 they launched their first menswear collection under the name Dsquared2, presenting a distinctive mix of Canadian aesthetics and Italian tailoring. The brand's name, “Dsquared2,” reflects their creative union: “D squared” for Dean and Dan.
An aesthetic signature of irony and provocation
Dsquared2 is renowned for its eclectic and provocative style, combining elements of streetwear, rock, sport, and glamour. Collections often feature bold contrasts: oversized garments paired with slim silhouettes, technical fabrics combined with luxurious details, and a clever use of accessories that evoke punk and grunge aesthetics. This ability to blend genres and influences has made the brand a benchmark for those seeking self-expression through fashion.
Celebrities and pop culture: an indissoluble bond
Over the years, Dsquared2 has collaborated with numerous celebrities and artists, strengthening its presence in pop culture. Madonna commissioned over 150 garments for her “Drowned World Tour” in 2001, and the brand has dressed artists such as Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears. These collaborations have solidified Dsquared2's image as a bold and avant-garde brand.
An unforgettable fashion show-party
To celebrate its thirtieth anniversary, Dsquared2 transformed the Milan Fashion Week runway into an explosion of energy and style. The Autumn/Winter 2025-2026 collection featured a variety of characters, from rebellious cowboys to disco queens, in an atmosphere reminiscent of a New York club. The show included collaborations with brands like Magliano, Vaquera, Better, Ducati, and the legendary band Kiss, highlighting the brand's eclecticism and its ability to constantly reinvent itself.
